Story behind "Out of the Flames'

Dedicated to those effected by the Ranger Road Fire 2026

The soot covered cowboy slid off his horse and tied him to the trailer. Slowly, he turned and watched the flames dance in the distance. “Well Duke..” he sighed patting the old sorrel, “I think we were too late.” The cowboy threw his hat on the ground and ran his hands through his soot covered hair. “I think they’re all gone.” he mumbled swearing under his breath. But the old sorrel knew better. He could hear them; young calves calling for mothers who were long gone. He could find them if he could free himself from the trailer. Tossing his head, the old sorrel threw his whole weight against the knotted rein until he heard a resounding SNAP, throwing himself backwards. He snorted at the cowboy, and took off at a full gallop running through the licking flames. The smoke filled his nostrils and burned his throat, but he didn’t care. The old sorrel’s hearing was far better than his sense of smell. It wasn’t long until he found four calves huddled against each other, taking turns calling for any cows to hear. As he got closer, the old sorrel noticed a fifth lay in the ground shaking its head, the afterbirth still wet beside him. The horse snorted and urged the newborn to stand, making sure the other four stayed close. Carefully and slowly, he guided the orphaned babies toward the edge of the fire, making sure to steer them away from any flames licking at their heels. Up ahead, the old sorrel noticed a break in the fire, the white smoke whirling like a signal flare. Quickly, he navigated the calves through the break, and snorted in relief as the older four raced towards the trailer ahead. The little newborn, however, stayed glued to the old sorrel not daring to stray from him. With his soot covered nose, he guided the still wet baby towards his racing siblings. As the old sorrel neared the trailer, he looked up to see his cowboy grinning from ear to ear and running towards him. The cowboy threw his arms around the old sorrels neck and cried, “You old boy, you saved them.”
